Potato Head Blues

Hello ,

In this lesson we look at the tune by Louis Armstrong “Potato Head Blues” and specifically to the bass line and the rhythmic relationship between the tuba and the banjo. This is to understand what gives the “swinging” quality and I give you exercises to practice and develop your swing feel.

Renata Aragón you mentioned during our class you wanted to learn some traditional repertoire. I think this tune would be nice for you to learn!

Hello, Alex. Yes, that’s a great idea, thank you! Can’t get more traditional than this. If I remember well, Potato Head Blues is one of the tunes listed in the early jazz section of the «Jazz» documentary by Ken Burns. I can totally hear it being played by two guitars! I will sure try it.

By the way, I have the low-volume video problem as well, although I have tried in several devices. I’ve resorted to using headphones but it is messy with the guitar and all the other cables around. 🙁
