Introduction

Christian Brenner is a celebrated pianist, composer, and producer whose work has shaped the Paris jazz scene for over 25 years. As the driving force behind the Café Laurent, located in the historic Hôtel d’Aubusson in Saint-Germain-des-Prés, Brenner has produced and organized thousands of concerts, fostering a unique community for jazz musicians and audiences alike. This discussion  explores his musical journey, the origins and growth of Café Laurent, his approach to concert production, and his reflections on the evolving jazz scene today.

Christian Brenner: Musician and Producer

Early Musical Background

Christian began his musical journey with classical piano, studying for eight years with private teachers. Although he described this early training as mediocre, it ignited his passion for playing. In his late teens and early twenties, he played in various ensembles with minimal formal practice. It wasn’t until age 30 that Christian focused seriously on structuring his musical knowledge, enrolling in professional jazz studies at IACP and later expanding his education while maintaining an active performing career.

From Piano Bars to Jazz Innovation

Before fully embracing jazz, Christian performed in piano bars, singing and playing a diverse repertoire including Nougaro, Gainsbourg, salsa, and afrofunk. Over time, he gravitated toward jazz, attracted by its harmonic complexity. A pivotal moment came when he decided to abandon rhythm machines and pursue formal jazz education, which led to a more focused musical identity.

The Birth and Evolution of Café Laurent

Origins and Location

Café Laurent is housed within the Hôtel d’Aubusson, a 5-star hotel in Paris’s Saint-Germain-des-Prés neighborhood. The venue features a unique acoustic setting with a quarter-grand Steinway piano, originally from the famed Villa jazz club. When Christian first approached the nearly empty café with a solo piano concept, initial attempts to start jazz performances were met with little success. However, persistence paid off after six months, and progressively the venue evolved into a vibrant jazz hub.

Building a Jazz Community

Christian’s vision was to create a welcoming space for jazz musicians and listeners without the barrier of entrance fees. Early programming started with solo and duo performances, expanding gradually to trios and quartets as the audience and budget grew. Over 25 years, Café Laurent hosted over 3000 concerts, showcasing more than 150 musicians annually, many of whom formed a close-knit community of rhythm sections and soloists.

Programming Philosophy

The programming focused on acoustic jazz standards and select original compositions, aligning with the sophisticated tastes of the hotel’s clientele, which includes both locals and international tourists. Christian emphasized the importance of a “warm” sound without amplification, regular piano tuning, and choosing musicians who play with subtlety appropriate for the intimate venue.

Concert Production and Musician Support

Financial Model and Subventions

Café Laurent’s concerts are free to the public, with revenue coming primarily from drink sales and hotel patronage. Musicians are paid according to syndical rates, typically around 100 to 120 euros net per concert, with trios and quartets qualifying for small public subsidies. Christian’s association, Amalgammes, acts as the producer, handling contracts, payroll, and logistics.

Challenges in Funding

Christian highlighted the precarious nature of funding for small jazz venues, especially given recent cuts to government subsidies. Delays in receiving funds often strain cash flow, requiring careful financial management. Despite these challenges, Christian’s commitment to fair musician pay and maintaining quality standards remained unwavering.

Building Professionalism and Respect for Musicians

Christian is a strong advocate for professional conditions in jazz performance. He insists on declared work and fair pay to protect musicians’ rights and sustain the art form. This stance contributed to improving working conditions in Paris jazz clubs over the years.

Insights on the Jazz Scene and Musician Development

The Role of Community and Networking

Christian stressed the importance of friendships and musical camaraderie in sustaining a career. He regularly organized gatherings for musicians to meet beyond the stage, fostering mutual support and collaboration.

Advice for Young Musicians

He advises young players to be regular, reliable, and conscious of the venue’s atmosphere. Choosing appropriate repertoire, mastering standards, and maintaining professional behavior are critical. Persistence is key, as programmers receive hundreds of requests and must make selective decisions based on artistic direction and logistical feasibility.

Impact of Technology and the Internet

While Christian embraces digital tools for administration and promotion, he expressed concern about the impact of AI and streaming on original composition and musicians’ livelihoods. Nevertheless, he acknowledged that young musicians today benefit greatly from online resources for learning and networking.
