Harmony crash course: tetrads in tonal harmony

In this short video (Tetrads in tonal harmony) I want to introduce or clarify some of the most foundational elements we need to understand and hear in order to play music in a tonal context.

In classical harmony as well as in pop music, the chords are mainly triads (except the dominant 7th chord). However, because in jazz we deal primarily with 7th chords, this introduction is going straight into this type of chords.

In this lesson you will learn:

• What is a tonal center

• The diatonic chords and their analysis

• Foundational harmonic motions with examples

• The secondary dominants and their analysis, with examples

• The extended dominants

• The related II- with examples

• How to do an harmonic analysis
