Bass Line Course

What is inside this course?

Everybody should understand what the bass player is doing and how the bass line works. The bass line is a melody in itself and has the purpose of helping us to hear the harmony. In this class you will learn everything about the bass line and how much closer it is to a bebop phrase than you think!

Syllabus

  • Chapter 1: we develop our ability to anticipate the harmony in Major with exercises using the root, the third, the fifth, chromatic passing tones.
  • Chapter 2: we practice the same exercises in minor.
  • Chapter 3: now we add scale fragments, both in Major and minor. We also look at the similarities between a bass line and a bebop phrase, you might be surprised!
  • Chapter 4: let’s create a bass line on the song Autumn Leaves, add two guide tones and improvise on top of this!
  • Chapter 5: let’s explore how we can play more chromatic and see how this is a great door to bebop language. Finally we look at a bass line by Ron Carter.
