Here is a template that can help determining your level and find the tailored content you need.

For clarity we have defined 5 levels but most of the time a student is navigating between at least 2 levels. It is not rare that someone might check some prerequisites from a higher level and lack some lower level knowledge. 

For each level you will find free lessons, JVL courses, recommended standards and masterclasses by some of the finest musicians in the world.

Level 1

You are able to identify and use creatively triads of diatonic chords and all secondary dominants. Repertoire of 10 foundational standards.

Level 2

Master the 7th chords. You are able to improvise with good voice leading, rhythmic accuracy and time using all types of 7th chords. Repertoire of 20 standards.

Level 3

Master the chords scales. You understand how to find the correct chords scales and how to improvise and connect different chords. Repertoire of 30 standards

Level 4

Master bebop language. You are able to use chromatic passing tones, extensions, bop vocabulary, with good time and voice leading. Repertoire of 40 standards.

Level 5

Coltrane changes, modal tunes, reharmonization, symmetrical scales, altered scales, pentatonics, hexatonics, 12-tone rows etc.. Repertoire of 50+ standards

Who is Alex Terrier?

Alex Terrier was born in Paris, France. In 2004 he received a scholarship to study at Berklee College of Music  He moved to New York in 2007 where he lived until 2021.

He is a Grammy nominated artist and has been associated with Kenny Barron, George Garzone, Jeff “Tain” Watts, Paquito D’Rivera, the Mingus Big Band and many more.

He is hailed by Dave Liebman as “a very impressive saxophonist and composer”.
